OrcaLoca 0
Underearth Assassins 3
Hethmair, Mortlil (2)
Underearth Assassins get their season back on course as they collected their first win of the season with a fine 3-0 win over the ragged greenskins. The Orccs provided a lot of hitting power, but they could not find a way to control their slippery foes.
A clever shot chip from Orca had the dark elves scrambling for ball protection, but within moments the defensive masterplan was in tatters as the Underearth pinpointed their key target and removed the strip balling expert, Mongee, with a thunderous strike from Celis. That removal would set the tone for the rest of the match.
Switching flanks had Orca all loca at the back, and a late rush from Scinn' Acuoll would not deny Hethmair's early TD. A clever deep placement of the ball at the restart had the offensive drive trying to cover deep as well as maintain a strong frontal presence, but the hosts spred themselves thin and saw 4 Assassins flood into the backfield to rush the exposed Scinn.
In another piece of great fortune, Mortlil singly-handedly landed a fine hit to knock out the ball carrier and send the visiting fans into delirium as they saw the blitzer run in with a takeaway score for a strong 2-0 lead at the interval. A well deserved result to reward the brave play.
OrcaLoca, in search of a quick reply, made inroads through the centre and had the elven defenders spread, but a momentary weakness in the scrum allowed a wiley shot at the ball by Yreoth, who took the invitation with aplomb and knocked out Scinn for the rest of the game - the stars spun around the thrower as he reeled from 2 KOs.
Scinn's understudy, rookie Budeller, showed vigour in his play as he recovered the spilt ball, but in his enthusiasm to impress, his forward play found himself in contact with Yreoth, who took advantage by ankle tripping the orc thrower. Once again, the Assassins swarmed around the loose ball with Hethmair handing off to Mortlil.
It was a fottrace to the endzone, with Mortlil having enough in the tank to outrun black orc, Grogg. Anger festered in the stands; screams of derision. Not even Varag's killer blow to end the guard-specialist, Gedlil, would placate the home fans.
Mortlil rushed in for his second takeaway TD to cap an impressive defensive masterclass, and the pandemonium was too much for in-game stewards to contain. A huge rock was hurled, which struck Gobber cold for the count.
The home fans made their feelings known to the side. OrcaLoca will look back in this game with little fondness, as their rotten luck continued, but this win will raise hopes and expectations of the Dark Elves, who will want to capitalise on this fine win with another stellar performance against play-off dark-horses, the Golden Eternals of Chaqua..
Mango's MVP: Mortlil with his two defensive TDs were rewards with interest, as it capped a powerhouse performance. Special mention to Yreoth, who was instrumental in 2 TDs, and Gedlil, who died for the cause.
