LT's Metal Heads 3
Melvin, Mastadon, Palms
Golden Eternals of Chaqua 2
Oatlgorit-tlu, Otzotl
Metal Head's play-off hopes were boosted after catcher Palms' late touchdown helped the humans leapfrog the Golden Eternals of Chaqua in this 5 TD thriller. It was the first win of the campaign for LT's men, which kept them in the hunt for the Championship, they did so in style in what was arguably the finest game of Blood Bowl in QMLS history.
A blistering start to the match saw much thunder-stomps and lighting strikes as neither team could shake off their opponents. It was a procession of violence that began with the first act as we saw key skink, Oatlux de lac, knocked out from the first turn!
The lizards retaliated as the mighty blow of the Kroxigor injured Bal-Sagoth, only to see another skink removed the very next turn. The removals quickly escalated and soon it was 7 vs 7 by the time the Chaquan lizards equalised through Oatlgorit-tlu after Metal Heads catcher, Melvins, secured a swift pass from Isis to snatch an early lead.
The violence did not let up as we saw a saurus, Xholtenqtsa, leaving the pitch after a near-fatal blitz that required urgent attention off-field. The paramedics worked miracles to get the cold-blooded lizard back onto the field after half-time, but they could do nothing to save another skink, who succumbed to the precise strike from the fists of Amorphis.
Metal Heads were not saved from the overflowing of blood as they too filled the infirmary with the dead and wounded, Agalloch personified the down-trodden luck as he smashed his knee trying to dodge the tail of the Kroxigor.
At times the Metal Heads looked set to run away with the scores, but the attacks were often repelled by last ditch skink sackings. One such sack initiated a counter from Gortsa, who dodged through 5 tackles - his diminutive stature saving his scaly skin from being brought down - and survived a blitz to be in sight of the end zone. The ball carrier soon found himself beaten up and was relieved to see Oatlgorit-tlu convert for 1-1.
But before the lizards could regroup, the temperature soared to sweltering climes and they found it hard to contain the robust attack at the end of the first half, as Mgla blitzed through and punched a gaping hole in the defence for Isis to run in and throw deep to Mastadon. A simple but effective tactic that has served the Metal Heads well this term, and it was good enough for the lead at the interval.
The bloody contest was a gift that kept on giving, and the crowd were treated to spectacle of blood, guts and a gloriously superb touchdown from Otzotl. When questioned after the game, the great saurus said, "No more little ones? I really had to do this myself... It wasn't part of the deal!"
The Golden Eternals started the half with just 6 players and one skink, but that was soon reduced to 5 as Oatlgorit-tlu suffered the fate of his stunty brethren. Hopes of an equaliser faded but not from some brave decisions by the giant lizards. The game was level going into the last phases of the game.
At 2-2, the Golden Eternals had the slimmest hope of winning the tie as both human throwers were injured in quick succession. But the Jack of all Trades Blitzers proved their weight in gold by setting up Palms with another playing play. With the big lizards tied up and unable to shake off their markers, Palms had the chance for glory. A blitz removed a crafty saurus marker to allow the catcher to dodge away and sprint to the line.
With mere seconds left on the clock, Palms draped himself with glory with the last play of the game and send the Metal Heads' fans into delirium!
The match will live long in the memory with high praise from the crowd and pundits alike. The game was rewarded the highest entertainment score of 20 out of 20 and the QMLS organisers showered both sides with an added financial bonus for producing a scintillating match!
Mango's Valuable Player: Isis. The game swung to and fro, with numerous outstanding performances, but the rookie thrower from Metal Heads was instrumental in almost everything great about the win.
