LT's Metal Heads 1
Melvins
Bognor Bograts 2
Snablutch Slobber 2
LT's Metal Heads showed great resilience and fortitude in defence to push the free-scoring Bograts to Extra-Time, but fell at the last hurdle as Snablutch Slobber ran in the late winner to seal a place in the QMLS Final.
Pre-match nerves filtered on to the pitch as neither side were prepared to take risks with the ball, but things began lively as the crowd burst through the line of stewards to riot and eat into the game clock. The Bograts, playing in defence, composed the quicker of the two sides and soon forced Devin Townsend into a ball handling error that Snablutch Slobber took full advantage of and run in a quick take-away.
It was not the ideal start for the humans, and they soon changed their gameplan into a caging scrum. With little time in the first half, the running game was snuffed out by the stubborn rats, who sheltered behind the ball. It would take a brave call to bomb over the top, but when the receivers were all floored, Isis the thrower had nowhere to make a play.
The Metal Heads ended, frustratingly, 1-0 behind at the interval.
Hiring a wizard for the match proved a masterstroke of good business for the Metal Heads, as he showed his worth to the team with a bolt from the skies to stun Snablutch, allowing Melvins, the human catcher to run in an equaliser soon in the second half.
The sweltering heat played it's part too, eliminating 3 rodents to enable LT's men to play high and wide, pressuring Snablutch the ball carrier. The weather settled down to a playable tempertature, but that caused the fans on the stands to go beserk and delay the game clock once more!
With eleven players on the field for each side, neither side could muster dominance of pitch control. With space at a premium, the relatively quiet Storm Vermin, Troy Pekorinho, began to push his weight around as he sniped away players causing 3 injuries and 2 KOs. Peckorinho was an irresistable force that eventually gave the Bognor Bograts the numerical supremacy to exploit.
Such was his devastating output, the Metal Heads' key thrower Devin Townsend was sent off for instigating and executing a gang foul on the killer rat. The Bograts saw their moment and flooded through into the opposition's half as the referee signalled for extra-time.
Isis, the rookie human thrower took responsibility upon himself as managed to wrestle Gruff-Rhyce Jones, the ball carrier, to the ground. But prone, he was unable to deter Snablutch from grabbing the dropped ball and whisk it away to safety.
The speed and numbers prevented any easy chance for regaining the ball, and Snablutch found his way into the endzone for his second TD (his 4th in 2 games) and secure the win that they craved.
The Metal Heads will feel hard done by, but they showed qualities that should put them in good stead for the next season. Meanwhile, the Bograts continue to impress on offense and will be licking their lips at the chance of being crowned champions for the first time.
Mango's Valuable Player: Troy Peckorinho was the difference in a tight game. The Bograts looked to his power-hitting inspiration to enable time and space for the gutter runners to exploit. A marvellous display of bone=breaking wreckage!
