Contractual disagreements as to who should be the headline act in the Quiçama Middlelands Superleague’s primetime show spilled on to the pitch, with the Elves upstaging their Human foes in one decisive drive to secure a fine win.
Questions about security at QMLS stadia once again dominated the agenda as the fans ran riot delaying the kick-off. The game, however, soon settled into a pattern of fine kicking and blocking schemes that the Celestials narrowly edged.
It was, however, the violence that placated the fans, with each side trading blows to key players. Indeed, the Elves looked in trouble with the loss of both Blitzers midway through the first half.
The game certainly lived up to the brutality that Thrust Industries sign up for and they revelled in the removal of opponents. It was not all plain sailing in the first half, however, as repeated failed dodges harmed their prospects of a swift score and left Devin Townsend the thrower exposed to an immense hit from the impressive Horthion Nallelwa, who took up the mantle as Celestial’s hard hitter.
It was swift revenge on the ball carrier as Devin had sent Aearion off-field on a stretcher. The Metal Heads had a juggernaut of their own tonight in the guise of Mgla who made the first major contribution with an injurious hook on Elf Blitzer Turin Noroos.
Metal Heads could not, however, make the breakthrough, as the deepest catcher, Gojira, smashed his ankle running a deep post route. The chance had gone to take the lead, and so they vented their frustrations on the Elven folk with two further KOs to end the half.
The fans were in jubilant mood as they revelled in the blood and violence. The teams resumed their tussle 8 players apiece. There were oceans of space to both vied to exploit, but the kick-off proved an interesting proposition.
The shallow kick from the humans managed to bounce behind the offensive line and allowed Rhhasdoien Shaladeth to pick the tricky ball unopposed, a glance to his right was the signal for catcher Upadgalad Augglinarin to run a deep streak behind the Metal Head’s secondary coverage.
Line-elf, Menanonon, opened up the passing lane right through the gut of the defence, and invited Rhhasdoien to make a decisively quick pass to the man-marked catcher. Upadgalad showed his nerves of steel on reception and he blitzed his marker free to break the deadlock.
The Elves kicked in kind with a short kick of their own, which had the Metal Heads scrambling for ball protection. Alarm bells were ringing, the offensive line could not effectively clear the Elven threat so near to the ball carrier.
Once the ball was under control, LT’s men switched flanks to stretch the defence. There was some success down the left as they pinned the defenders, but the plucky Elves held firm with patience.
A breakaway from Isis the thrower down the right threatened to overrun the flank, but his quick pass was inexplicably fumbled, and that allowed the nimble Rhhasdoien to pick up the loose ball and toss it square to Horthorion, who swiftly ran to the half-way line. The contest stood on a knife-edge, and time ebbed away, but Metal Head’s Blitzer, Mgla, desperately sacked the ball carrier to give the thinnest glimmer of hope.
The game suddenly switched gears and the exchange of blows accelerated with many sacrificing sure footing for the glory of goals. The final act was Mastadon, who was in possession of the ball, being torn down by a courageous but ill-timed tackle from Verdir. The power of the tackle knocked both out of the rest of the game. Importantly, there remained no threat left for a late equaliser.
Celestial Comedy earned 3 points and look like an outfit that may shine in Season X. Perhaps the former Dwarverhampton Wanderers coach was right after all! LT’s Metal Heads will be frustrated knowing that key moments in the game prevented a score. Rest assured this human team look a menacing proposition in the league.
Both are fine additions to the QMLS in what promises to exceed the drama of last season. And that, dear readers, is no bad thing!
Mango's Valuable Player: Upadgalad Augglinarin was the epitome of the Elven game, with an unstoppable catch that shredded through the Metal Head's defence in one swift play.
