Bognor Bograts 2
Snablutch, Head-Lyce Creep
Darklands 1
Kardel (journeyman)
Bognor Bograts scored a last-minute touchdown to steal a win against a Zara-the-Slayer inspired Darklands side. The immensely gifted Amazonian lent her skills to her fellow human colleagues by being a colossus on the ball. Her strength nullified the skaven mobility and, time-and-again, she marched downfield breaking numerous tackles.
The Bograts utilised the juggernaut rat ogre to good effect, as Rogre Breaknut punched a hole through the Darkland defence allowing the harassing gutter runners to stream through the middle, only to see the nimble Zara impose her commanding presence on the game and rallied the team to the relative safety of midfield.
It was only when Dagg the ogre stunned himself when blocking did a real opportunity present itself as gutter runner, Gruff Rhiyz-Jones, succeeded in wrestling Zara to the astrogranite.
It seemed the offensive drive was unravelling, but a failed pick up allowed the humans respite. And to the surprise of the home crowd, journeyman Griswold pulled off one of the miracle plays of the season as he scooped the ball under the nose of Snabyj the Storm Vermin, dodged away and passed a short distance into the grateful clutches of fellow mercenary lineman, Kardel, who scored a famous touchdown.
With time running out on the clock, Darklands fortified their defence anticipating a lightning response from their furry opponents. Zara, once more, marshalled her teammates and denied the space for the rats to impose their running game. Darklands secured an unlikely 1-0 lead going into half-time, but key human blitzer, Gunther, was injured by Rogre, meaning that they would start the second half one player less that their hosts.
Rogre honed his frenzied attacks at Zara, taking her out of the picture with a wonderous hit, which enabled the rodents to scurry down the left flank in numbers. Zara would not lie down for long, as her ability to jump up and dodge out of trouble became a source of worry for Bograts. Only a failed GFI halted her blitz on Snablutch the ball carrying gutter, who equalised early in the second half.
Zara bamboozled her way through the intense high-pressure of the gutter runners on receiving kick-off and she was a thorn on both sides of the ball. Seeing her comrades skittle to Rogre’s hits and the gutters’ spread defence, Zara took it upon herself, with no reroll to fall back on, to dodge through 3 tackles and pass to Viggo, who was wide open beyond the halfway line; another brilliant play that moved the chains with little time remaining.
A desperate lunge by Snabyj failed to dislodge the ball from the lineman, but he was all that stood between Viggo and a shock win. Fate conspired against the humans as Viggo was tackled by Snabyj, who picked the loose ball and tossed it downfield to Head-Lyce in a rapid counter-attack. In a blink of an eye, Bognor Bograts scored the late winner to inflict a painful defeat on their human visitors.
The win for Bognor means that they temporarily take top spot, and eagerly await the result of the gigantic clash between fellow play-off hunters Hashutites and OrcaLoca. Meanwhile, Darklands will take comfort in almost pulling off a shock win against the number one offense as they rebuild for the future.
The two teams once again clash in the return fixture on the penultimate week of Season 1 in the QMLS.
